About the Course

Livestock farming is very critical to poverty alleviation and promoting food security. The venture can help provide regular income to households. However, livestock farming is faced by a big challenge of poor and expensive feeds. As a result of these challenges, many farmers end up making losses or stagnate in their production which is contrary to their goal of making profit. This course aim to equip participants on the theoretical and practical aspects of livestock feed production, feed processing, feed formulation and quality control. It will enable practitioners formulate feeds which meet the supply of all the nutrients required by farm animals.

Target Participants

This course is ideal for smallholder farmers who may want to understand how to formulate their own livestock feeds. The course is also suitable for field technicians and agricultural extension staff, representatives of cooperative societies and NGOs, and entrepreneurs in feed formulation and manufacturing.

What you will learn

By the end of this course the participants will be able to:

  • Identify locally available raw materials and their nutritional values in order to optimize their use in livestock nutrition
  • Assess animal’s nutritional needs depending on production
  • Know the nutrients and their functions that are required to formulate animal feeds at least cost.
  • Formulate feed rations for respective livestock species
  • Produce, secure quality feeds pastures and fodders for animal feeding
  • Understand feed milling management
  • Understand  various ingredient for processing methods
  • Understand economic benefits of feed mill
  • Learn safety regulations pertaining to feed manufacturing

  • Sampling procedures and submission to the laboratory for analysis

  • Dry season feeding
